Accessibility

This site is built to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.1, level AA, and is working toward version 2.2 AA. That is a commitment we have made, not a claim that every page has been independently certified.

What that means in practice

• Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, and the first thing you can tab to is a link that skips the navigation.
• Focus is always visible. It is never suppressed anywhere on this site.
• Text can be resized to 200 percent, and the layout reflows at 320 pixels wide without sideways scrolling.
• Every color pairing used for text meets at least the AA contrast ratio, and the ratios are computed by a test that fails the build if one slips.
• Every photograph has a description of what is actually in the frame. The decorative shapes and icons, a small family of petal shapes the practice owns and a few line icons beside headings and list items, are all hidden from assistive technology; the text beside them carries the meaning.
• Form labels sit above their fields and stay there. Nothing on this site uses a placeholder as a label.
• Sections fade in gently as you scroll, once, and nothing loops, autoplays or moves on its own. If your device asks for reduced motion, nothing moves at all.
• Every phone number and crisis link is a large tap target, well past the 24 by 24 pixel minimum.

What we know is not finished

An honest list is more useful than a badge.

• There has been no independent third-party audit. Testing so far has been keyboard only, plus screen reader testing, plus automated checking, and automated tools find roughly a third of real problems.
• We have not tested every combination of browser, screen reader and operating system, and older Android browsers in particular are undertested.
• Nothing on this site is captioned or transcribed, because there is no audio or video on it yet. When there is, it will be.

We do not use an accessibility overlay

Those are the widgets that add a floating icon offering to change contrast or font size. They do not make a site conform, disability advocacy organizations have argued against them for years, and they have been the subject of litigation and federal enforcement. Where something here is wrong we would rather fix the page.

The building

The office is one-story, with a covered entrance and parking behind the building. If you need to know about a specific access requirement before you come, call and ask and you will get a straight answer.
