Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

If you do not have insurance, or you are not using it, you have the right to a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start.

Ask for one when you schedule, or at any time before. If you book at least three business days ahead, the estimate reaches you within one business day; if you book at least ten business days ahead, within three business days. A request on its own is answered within three business days.

If a bill comes in $400 or more above your estimate, you can dispute it through the federal process at www.cms.gov/nosurprises, or call the federal help desk at 1-800-985-3059.

This right is for people who are uninsured or who choose not to use their insurance. If you are using a plan, what you pay depends on your own benefits, and the insurance page sets out what to ask yours.
