Who this is for
Limited licensed counselors accruing supervised experience toward Michigan LPC licensure. Counselors who have lost a supervisor mid-way and need continuity rather than a fresh start. And practitioners in northern Michigan who have found that the list of approved supervisors within reasonable distance is short.
Where it happens
Supervision is arranged individually, and Michigan is the whole of the catchment: a Michigan approved supervisor can supervise a Michigan limited licensed counselor wherever in the state they work. In person, that is 4093 M-65, Hale, MI 48739, which is a straightforward run up I-75 and across on M-55 from Bay City, Saginaw or Flint. If you need to meet remotely, ask when you call. That is a question about how the arrangement is set up rather than a service this page will promise you sight unseen.
What supervision here is like
Case consultation that is actually about your cases. Time spent on the parts nobody teaches in a graduate program: what to do when a client will not engage, how to sit with somebody whose situation you cannot fix, how to write a note you would be content to read out in a hearing, and how to tell the difference between a clinical judgment and a nervous one.
Documentation is treated as part of the work rather than as an afterthought, because the supervision record is the thing the board eventually reads.
Supervision is individual by default. Whether a group runs at any given time depends on who is accruing hours at the same time, so ask; nothing here advertises a group that may not exist. Capacity is limited by the same arithmetic, which is why the answer to "are you taking anyone" is a phone call rather than a form.
Where the rules are, and roughly what they ask
The requirements a limited licensed counselor works under, including what supervision must involve, are set out in Michigan's own administrative rules at Mich. Admin. Code R 338.1781. In outline, the rule requires a period of counseling experience under the supervision of an approved supervisor, with a minimum number of supervised hours and a minimum amount of direct supervision inside them, recorded as you go.
The numbers are the rule's to state and not this page's: they have been amended before and a figure printed here would eventually be wrong in a place somebody was relying on it. Read the rule, read it alongside whatever your employer or graduate program requires, and bring your plan of supervision to the first conversation so that both of us are working from the same document.
The shortage is real
Iosco, Ogemaw and Oscoda counties are federally designated a High Needs Mental Health Professional Shortage Area, HRSA designation 7261033101, and roughly 45,000 people here are counted as underserved. Every counselor who finishes supervision and stays in this part of the state is a direct answer to that, which is a large part of why this practice does supervision at all.
