ADHD counseling in Hale, Michigan

ADHD is not a character flaw and it is not about trying harder. It is a difference in how attention and self-regulation work, and there are real skills for living with it well.

You might recognize some of this

A seven year old who cannot stay in a chair and cannot stop talking. A seventeen year old who is clearly bright and is failing anyway. A forty year old who has spent their whole life being called lazy and disorganized and has quietly believed it.

ADHD gets missed a lot, especially in girls and in adults, because it does not always look like a boy bouncing off the walls. Sometimes it looks like daydreaming, chronic lateness, a house that never quite gets tidy, and an exhausting amount of effort spent covering for all of it.

What we can and cannot do here

This is worth being plain about. Ann Marie is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She can assess ADHD and diagnose it using the standard diagnostic criteria, and she can do the counseling work that follows.

She does not carry out full psychological or neuropsychological testing, and she does not evaluate or prescribe medication. If either of those is what you need, we will say so and help you find the right person rather than stretching what we do.

How Ann Marie works with this

Practical skills for the things ADHD actually makes hard: getting started, keeping track, regulating frustration. Work with parents on what helps and what makes it worse at home. Support with school, including working alongside teachers and attending IEP or 504 meetings with your permission.

And, for a lot of adults, repairing a self-concept built out of years of being told they were the problem.

About medication

Ann Marie is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She does not prescribe medication. Some people do better with medication alongside counseling, and if that looks likely we will help you talk to your doctor and, with your written permission, work alongside them.

Coming from Tawas City, West Branch or Oscoda

People drive in to Hale for ADHD counseling from right across the Sunrise Side. The road times are worth knowing before you commit to a weekly appointment, so here they are.

Say which town you are coming from when you call. It changes which times are sensible to offer you, and on the longer drives a longer appointment spaced further apart sometimes works better than a weekly hour. Road times from the rest of the area are on the service area page.

Practical

Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, and what to expect and what to bring is set out in full. Most major insurance is accepted, see which plans and what to ask yours before you come.

Related: anxiety and adjustment and stress, both of which are common alongside ADHD and are often what actually brings somebody in.
